More serious was the range shortfall which, in spite of several airframe modifications (including the filling the boundary layer slots in the LEX and the elimination of the dog-tooth from the wing leading-edge to reduce drag) and engine improvements to reduce specific fuel consumption, was never fully corrected. Although the F/A-18 range remained less than specified after all changes had been imcorporated, it was still greater in the fighter escort role than that of the NcDonnell F-4J it repaced. In the strike role the F/A-18 range was found to be 10 to 12 per cent shorter than that of the LTV A-7E. Nevertheless, as in all other respects teh Hornet met or exceeded specifications with air combat capability and weapon delivery accuracy being particulary outstanding, the range deficiency did not prevent the Navy from ordering the aircraft info full csale production without the need to approve a proposed increase in internal fuel capacity through the installation of tanks in a dorsalfairing aftof the cockpit.
