The idea has been going around for ages in the West (especially Alberta) for the last decades or so. Remember, the "WEST" do not get their fair representation in the federal gov't, especially in the Senate. The less concentration of power in the central Canada, means the power will be distributed more towards the West, and the balance of power (hopefully) will tilt towards the West. The federal gov't has been using transfer payment as lollypop to keep Quebec in the federation, however, this is being done at the expense of the "West" who do not get their fair share of transfer payment back in their provinces. In resource rich Alberta, it doesn't really matter much, however, now the debt stricken BC, Saskatchewan, and Manitobe, it does matter. Especially in BC, where their economy has seen downfall under the impact of the Asian Crises. It is well known that the prosperous era of early 90's of BC economy was due to the Asian economy and export to Asia as well as huge influx of funds from HK and Japan. Getting fair share of the transfer funds back to the western provinces would help rebuild the economies in the West. And when you look at universities in the West compared to McGill U, the federal fundings are quite unfair. With heavy investment from federal gov't, McGill was able to build a world renowned name for itself. However, w/ exception of U of Alberta (where the provincial gov't put heavy investments) universities in the west isn't very noteworthy in the international academic community. This must stop. (Man, I sound like reformer now...) Personally, I care not if Quebec seperates. If they want to go their own way with their own agenda, so be it. They have no idea what they're getting into. The last vote for seperatism have triggered relocation of head office for major corporation to outside Quebec. Good example would be CN's head office relocation to Calgary. And Quebec has lost a lot of investment from Ontario. Many investors have taken back their investment from Quebec (for fear of separation in the future.) Quebec's recession is caused by Quebecois themselves. Seperating from Canada would only hurt themselves, and help the power distribution to the rest of Canada, especially for the West, where people have been chanting equal representation for decades. Many of these ideas have been around in the West for ages, especially Alberta. Reform party has taken many of these idea into their platform. (yeah, like many people on this board really cares about this...) Anyway, it's about time some easterner takes on this idea for a change. :) |
