I can only say as a language user - one of the novise, I think. Still I can say that both 'friend' and 'CHIN_GU' can imply wide range of relationship. See, in your argument, you had continueum of [acquaintantship ........ friendship] and 'CHIN_GU' is closer to right hand side than 'friend'. I really can't tell. So far I used the two words indistinguishably and didn't find any difference. One funny thing is that the word 'friendship' itself has 'friend' in it. Wouldn't it make the 'friend' word VERY close to right hand side in the continueum? By the way, in tennis match, in stead of 'SA_RANG', some people say 'YEONG' or 'PPANG'. The other say 'rub' or 'REO_BU' (in attemp to say 'love'.) I read all the messages that were posted since you raised the question to see if anyone commented. Well, it seems it's just us who are interested, or are willing to read/write in English.
