As these pirates left Samho Jewelry on a small boat, it means that the pirates were separated by two teams, and that it was a good chance for Choi Young to intercept the tanker. Therefore Choi Young deployed commandos in 2 speedboats and a lynx helicopter. The helicopter fired machine guns at the pirates' small boat, and at the same time the two sppedboats approached to the tanker. The four pirates at the small boat tried to return to the tanker, however they were immediately shot dead by the 12mm helicopter machine gun or some of them jumped into the water to avoid the bullet. Thereafter their dead bodies at the boat are thrown away into the seawater. Three AK rifles that were left by the pirates when they jumped or were thrown into the seawater, small three iron ladders that was used to crawl up ships and their small boat were confiscated by the Choi Young commandos, including some other tools, like a screwdriver, a spanner, some bolts and nuts. As pirates had only 6 AK rifles in total and 3 of them were now confiscated, they lost the half of their rifles, and about a quarter of their personnel. In the meantime, two speedboats rushed to the tanker. However they are barred from approaching the tanker by the AK bullets of the pirates on the tanker and finnaly they had to retreat. In the process three South Korean military personnel were wounded. The pirates' attempted hijacking of the Mongolian ship failed, and a few days later it would be hijacked by other somalian pirates. [10] After this engagement, the South Korean military decided to initiate a boarding operation, as intelligence reports suggested that the remaining captors were fatigued and that additional pirates were being dispatched from Somalia to reinforce them.[4] |
