U of A once was the second biggest school in Canada about a decade ago during the Oil Boom of the 80's. With the provincial gov't cut back on the fund it has downsized quite a lot. Edmonton's temperature varies from -35 C in winter to +35 in the summer. Be prepared for a very cold winter as well as hot summer. It is about 4 hrs from Jasper (small resort town of Rockies) to the east, and 3 hrs from Calgary another major city center to the south. The Korea population here is about 3,000? or so. There used to be large population of Korean students who study English in the faculty of Extension in the past, however, these days the number should be diminished ... U of A population should be around 25,000 compared to 40,000+ in the 80's. The living cost on the campus is quite cheap. The university operates about quite a lot of buildings for student residence. Many grad students live in Mitchener Park (about 20 min away from main campus). I used to pay $400 for 2 bedroom apt few years back. The public transportation is quite good compared to many other metroplitan areas. A lot of ESL students live in HUB, an apt complex right on campus. Rent ranges from $200 (for 4 bedroom suits) to $400 (bachelors). If you plan to study, I strongly recommend you stay away from HUB. However, HUB's lease agreement is very flexible so you may choose to settle down there initially and move out to find better living arrangement. Living in the dormitory (God forbid) is rather mundane. You'll hate the food there, so don't bother. As far as living cost goes, I once lived on budget of $350/months, including the rent. $500/months should be more than comfortable for most, however, some spend over $1000/months (makes me wanna wonder).
