World Cup USA '94 News The soccer World Championship (World Cup) is a quadrennial event which has been held since 1930 (there were no 1942 or 1946 championships). It is arguably the biggest sporting event on Earth. The next World Cup will be held in the USA in June/July 1994, with matches in 9 different cities. Over 100 national teams from 5 zones competed in a qualifying round to determine which teams will make it to the World Cup final rounds (the host USA, and current champions Germany qualified automatically). The qualifying round ended in November '93, with 24 teams, divided into 6 groups, earning the right to compete in the World Cup final round. A semi-random draw was held in December '93 to determine the schedule. In the mean time, the qualifiers will take part in some international friendly matches. You can also take a look at Strikerthe USA'94 mascot, or other soccer pictures. There's also a section containing selected news and tidbits about the World Cup, and a list of other soccer-related resources on the web, and a list of players to watch in USA'94 (under construction). 1. World Cup history The FIFA (the governing body of world soccer) World Cup soccer (football) championships are the most anticipated and watched sporting events in the world. More viewers watch them than the Superbowl, World Series of Baseball, and Olympics combined. The game of soccer is governed by a comprehensive set of FIFA rules. The brief soccer glossary contains definitions of some of the common terms in soccer. Alternatively, you can take a brief list of soccer-related acronyms and international competitions. Some trivia about the past world cups: Brazil has made it to every World Cup so far.
