But you do not have to urge that everybody else has to feel in the same way as you do. Japan started the 2nd world war but Korea did not start the Vietnam war. I do not think we had enough control over our own army not to send our troops to Vietnam either. We were a cheap alternative to US army in Vietnam. In my view, Korean army's position is not much different from the people who were drafted in the 2nd world war in Japanese side. A lot of Koreans are drafted to the battle field for Japan and killed. Some of them were accused as war criminals and prosecuted as such. I reckon I can talk about Vietnam war with any Vietnamese without feeling guilty. They do not ask you to feel guilty. After all what is important in history is how to make our future better. Not how to remorse about our past. 안되는 영어로 쓴다고.. 다시 우리말로.. 월남전에서 우리나라군인들이 한 일로 죄책감을 느끼시는건 좋은데 다른 사람들까지 똑같이 느끼라고 얘기하기는 뭐하군요. 일본은 2차대전의 주축국이지만 한국이 월남전을 일으킨 건 아닙니다. 솔직히 당시 우리가 월남에 전투병을 보내지 않겠다고 결정할 만큼 군의 작전권이 있었다고도 생각하지 않습니다. 한국군은 그냥 미군의 값싼 대체품이었을 뿐입니다. 제가보기엔 파월국군의 위상이 이차대전때 징용간 한국인들과 크게 다르지 않다고 봅니다. 수많은 사람이 징용되어가서 이역만리에서 죽어갔고, 심지어 전쟁후 전범으로 재판받고 처벌/처형된 사람도 있습니다. 전 제가 월남사람들과 월남전에 대해 얘기하는데 주저하지 않습니다. 그들은 우리가 그 비극들에 대해 죄책감을 느끼기를 원하지 않습니다. 결국 역사란 것은 우리의 미래를 어떻게 개선하느냐에서 의미를 찾을 수 있지 과거를 후회하기위한 것은 아니기때문입니다. 이런 우리말도 쉽지않군요.. :) -- 김 규동 % Silicon Image, Inc. 1060 E.
