First level: understanding by reading or memorizing(use your brain) You can understand something by reading it. Let say, for example, you can understand binary search tree for the first time by reading, or by attending lecture. It may take about a day to understand it. After that, it seems like you understand it all, it seems like you know everything about binary tree now. Well, guess what. You're wrong. You may know about 1% of it at most. 2. Second level: understanding by experience(use your body) You can further understand something that you learned before by experiment and experience. You may find that it was really nothing that I knew before. For example, if you are going to implement binary search tree on computer for the first time, it may take 10 days. You will find more detail concept of binary tree as you program it, and you need to consult with other texts or your friends. Once you implement it, you feel like you completely understand it. But, there is a long way to go. It just the beginning of understand. 3. Third level: understanding methodology(use your imagination) Now, you have to start the real understanding. So far, the first two level, it was just copying someone's idea. You just understood the phenomena. You just saw something happened. You just saw a fact. Now, you have to understand how it happened and why it happened. You have to understand principle. Do not just see the outside, try to look into the inside. I think 90% of people stop at the second level(99% people stop at the first level). To understand the idea, try to solve similiar problems, apply what you learned to some other fields. AVL tree is good example for the case of binary tree. It may take several months for you to do this kind of work. If you are lucky you can find a similiar methodology which you can apply to similiar application. 4. Forth level: create a new idea(use your feeling) Well, now, what can be the next? At the third level you understand something completely. I bet you do, even though it take you several months. Now, what are you going to do? I mean, what are you supposed to do next? You're going to stop? No way!!! How is it going to be a man who create a new idea? Who creates it anyway? Have you ever imagined it before? I can't tell you what the forth level is, because I've never experienced it. But I can tell you this; there is someone who knows more than me, who creates new idea, who tries to find out what the God created, dedicating his own life to it. > Now, what level are you in? > Most of time, where do you stop? > I'm not talking about the study only. > I'm talking about you everyday life. > You can enhance you life. > Think carefully.
