| [ KAIST ] in KIDS 글 쓴 이(By): mkjung (루돌프아지) 날 짜 (Date): 2000년 12월 19일 화요일 오후 06시 45분 37초 제 목(Title): Re: 대가에 대한 환상 그러나 배울수만 있다면 대가는 뭔가 다른데가 있습니다. 책에 안나오는 그 뭔가를 가르쳐줄수 있습니다. 뭔가 학문에 대한 감각이랄까 그런게 있단 말이죠. 학생과 포닥이 이리저리 낑낑대고 헤멜때 대가는 한번 이렇게 해봐~ 하고 툭 던져준단말이죠. 그런 노하우 직관력 같은게 아주 뛰어난 사람들이죠. 큰 스승밑에서 큰 업적을 남기는 사람이 많은게 이런이유가 크다고 봅니다. ========== i had a chance to work under a master in 'fluid dynamics' for my master. he was one of the biggest name in so called 'classical fluid dynamics'. unfortunately, he wasn't a great teacher. i learned more about fluid reading books myself than from him. i had no respect for him and no emotional bonding. he just throw me some problems (most of them hand computation of his research.) and asked me to carry out never explaining why that is so. i finally gave up what i was doing fearing my future. i was completely confused about what i am doing. he didn't think of me highly either. after 1 years of confusion, i finally gave up and decided to study other field. i choose 'statistics' because i felt it is the closest area to mathematics. then by accident, i met my current master in the area of 'statistics and brain imaging'. he is one of the founder in this area. he looks very ordinary professor. i didn't have much respect when i first became his student and didn't even know he was such famous. i thought he was doing something neat computer graphics and that was why i choose him. over the years following him after conference after conference, seeing how other people admire him and the way he commend others respect, i realized he is a true master. he is the only teacher i have ever respected in my entire life. he is a full professor in 2 departments and 1 institute. he was the winner of Kalim award this year. (This is the highest honor canadian scientist get from the government only 5 people are selected in every year.) he travel at least once every two weeks. yet, sometime i see him staying until 10 and working. i see him writing matlab code himself never asking his students to do it. his insight is rarely wrong. even if it is wrong, it meant different new appraoch to try. i saw him writing matlab code in 10 minutes, which took me 2 hours to write. i saw him correctly guessing where my argument is incorrect, even thou i spent 3 weeks to write down while he looked it for only 10 minutes. with him, you feel like you can do anything. with true master, you feel like you become smarter and more sharp.
