I will try to use ancient Hanterm on my Sparc Ultra 1 next time, if it works now! The reason I went for VAIO note (PCG 505RX) last year was pretty simple; it was the only one that had 1024x768 resolution onboard at the time I and my colleague were choosing "new" notebook. As a mobile computing user since Libretto 50, I found that scrolling the screen to read emails with small-ish pointing devices were pretty much severe and frustrating. (Libretto 50 by Toshiba had 640x480 resolution) And what's interesting, VAIO series are not released from Sony Computer Division as they stopped manufacturing real computers after they failed to market NEWS workstations in early '90s. VAIO was another attempt by Sony from Consumer Electronics Devision, so you can regard VAIO series as one of the lineups from "SONY Walkman" or "MD walkman," etc. Thus they seem to have very good network of repair service, as that what VAIO note books really need:-) Now that XGA resolution notebooks are not as rare as they used to be, what I would like to suggest to people who are considering getting a notebook PC for mobile computing (esp. reading emails, accessing WWW, writing documents while away from home) are: 1. Screen resolution. Basically, the higher, the better. Large screen would be fine for those who loves big characters, but you will end up scrolling the screen very often. 2. Keyboard strokes and Pad feeling. I must say that I could touch type on Toshiba Libretto 50, and I am now very much used to VAIO's pad. You may feel uncomfortable with new keyboard/pad at first, but you will get used to in a couple of months or around it. 3. Weight. This really is a problem. My back pack is feather light today, without heavy VAIO note:-) 4. AC adaptor voltage: this is really important to people who travel around world wide. VAIO has 100-120/200-240V capability, but some models may not have. 5. Your local support for the PC, especially when you shop abroad. And.. here comes drawbacks of VAIO, as I feel: 1. Versapad freezes the entire system from time to time, after resuming from Fn+f12 2. I am used to the key touch, but sometimes I mess NEC keyboard or SUN type IV keyboard... 3. The earliest LCD displays were very faulty. 4. You will need an optional port replicator to hook the note PC to extra display. It's not very cheap. So does an extra AC adaptor! 5. After all, it's a SONY. Mine, actually the one my company bought one for me, needed its first repair within a year. The same part needed mending after two weeks it came back from the repair...
