While it is true that most Koreans do not know how to be polite when speaking or writing in English, I do not find their tone to be any harsher than an average American's. Most Americans do not speak English in the manner that he writes. This is not to say that I would like have less people speak politely. It is just that I smell a bit of condescending attitude in Billy's writing. Regarding the "Mee-Guk-Saram" incident that he has had to face before moving, all I can say is that I have heard much worse things back in the states ranging from "Chink","jap" - although I am a Korean, the home boys seem to have found the distinction rather difficutly - to "yellow boy". Most Americans get much better treatment here than the one that the Koreans get back in the states. The Americans should be thankful. Most Koreans envy and like Americans even though most Americans don't give a damn about the Koreans. I would like to say this to all the Koreans posting on this English only board. "Don't worry about your grammar, but be caring and considerate when writing in English as you would be if you were writing in Korean. The Americans do not speak Korean as well as you speak English. It is no shame to speak "Konglish" as they say. Just try to learn better ways of expressing your ideas." I apologize if I have been to harsh on Billy, but I had to say what must have been on many Koreans' minds. I hope he will understand. |
