In fact, the Industrial Age can be viewed as a convenient metaphor for the process of transforming, exchanging, and discarding nonrenewable energy. Our entire economic structure is built from and propelled by fossil fuels. We have invaded the long-silent burial grounds of Carboniferous Age, appropriating the dead remains of yesteryear for the use of the living today.^1^ As I look at the watch, heater, fountain pen, coffee maker, Halogen lamp, CD player ... hear the cry of reptiles, ferns, amphibians, etc. Ticktacking is the heartbeat of 'em; shining surface is the (sad) eyes of 'em; humming sound of small motor of CD player is that of breathing. Like a tiger who no longer can stand the sight of blood,^2^ I'm watching them, dully. jhan ^1^ Jeremy Rifkin, _Algeny_ Penguin Book, 1984 ^2^ "Ein Tiger, der kein Blut mehr sehen kann." -- Elias Canetti 혹시라도 어쩌다가 아픔같은 것이 저며올 때는 그럴 땐 바다를 생각해 바다 ... -- 김민기의 <봉우리> 중에서 jhan@ucsd.edu |
