I have been reading your messages with some interest for the past few days. When are you planning to go to Korea? Perhaps Ican be of little help here... I have lived in Yang Pyong DOng for about a year and half during 1991-92. I am wondering what part of Yang Pyong DOng you were in. Were you near the railway station? Becuz Yong Deung Po station (train and subway) is in the exact spot as thirty years ago.. :) There is a hug shopping mall called Lotte department store now.. next to the train station. It is very busy around there as the station has trains departing to Inchon and other Seoul suburbs. There are many many commuters.. There is also the entrance to the Highway leading to Inchon.. Yong Deung Po is a very busy place. I am not aware of any military stations or bases around the area. Maybe I can find out.. The area still harbors some factories and small-scale companies. There is an industrial "complex" nearby called the Guro Gong Dan, in Guro Dong.. It used to be a hot place for workers led movements for better work conditions. The area is a curious mix of high rise apartments, factories, and even a red light district. I must say it is quite representative of KOrea-- at once industrailized, yet still harboring quite substandard ways of life for the people.. It is predominantly a working class area. I think I pretty much summed up the picture of Yong Deung Po.. If you are interested in knowing the geography of the area.. maybe I can get some more info for you. Good luck in your quest. :) Hayun Kang. |
