I don't think there was any message that the director wanted to give us. I did not get any. As he has done in many movies, Robert De Niro in that movie impressed me a lot. De Niro met a girl. They were looking over the town on some floor at night. When De Niro asked the girl if she was lonesome, she nodded. Then the girl asked De Niro "Are you lonesome?" and Deniro "I am alone, but I am not lonely." Jesus, have I heard any better phrase that describes a person's loneliness than that phrase? Have I ever seen eyes that show deeply grained lonesomeness better than De Niro's eyes in that movie? My town is celebrating the independence of their country. They will have big fireworks tonight. They say we should celebrate their independence together because their independence symbolizes our, human beings, conquest of freedom, independence. Well, go ahead and enjoy the fireworks. I will watch 'Heat' tonight. |
