Where I live (Adelaide), people say there are at least 3-4 Korean students in a class. Ironically enough, most of them seem to have been told that in Adelaide there won't be any Koreans at all. :I I guess Korean agencies need some serious updating on their info.. And, imagine how other cities would be like... Once someone told me that it will usually take at least a year to make English a part of your language skill, that is, to be able to think in English without having to go through the process of translating Korean into English before you speak or write, and vice versa for reading and hearing. Then they also say, it will take at least another year to "keep" what you earned. So in total you need at least two years before you can say you have English as your second language. I know many people who go overseas to learn English can not afford such a long time, and they want to learn as much as they can while they are abroad. My advice is; Don't feel too pressured. Advantage of learning English overseas lies mainly in that you "live" in an environment where English is the "primary" language, not the "only" language used. Though I fully understand your eagerness to practice in English at every occasion, I hope you do not let your frustration prevent you from enjoying your stay. Even if you become able to use English at every single moment, you will probably need at least two years to fully satisfy yourself (though I do not know how high your aim is). Maybe you are bit worried that your English does not seem to be improving much. Let me assure you that it does improve a great deal and, there will come a moment when you suddenly realise that. Personally, I believe that the best way to learn English overseas is not to come in order to study English, but to study something else in English. You never know how capable you are until your back is to the wall. :) Hope this helps evryone who is thinking about English study abroad. Shining. |
