She makes an analogy between the yearing of a woman who misses her lover and son in North Korea and the aria of a dumb person who tries to sing a song. The dumb person can not make sound. This impossibility of singing makes the effort of the woman to sing tragic. If one can hear a song not through ear but through the mind, the mute song of a dumb person must be a shout, a cry, and a scream rather than a song in a normal sense. For the dumb person developed such a powerful yearning to do the impossible -- to sing an aria. I think Choi was using the image of dumb's aria to point out the tragedy of the division of Korean peninsular. But not only society faces this tragedy of the impossible in its history. Some people undergo this period of a mute song in their lives. I am wondering what she is doing these days who was the main character in Choi, Yun's novel. I hope she can sing her aria soon. S.O.S |
