One temple- Ponwon Chongsa- lost two recently constructed Dharma Halls- one contained over 500 intricately carved and painted statues of arhats and bodhisattvas- at a financial loss of nearly $3 million. >The International Zen Center of Hwagyesa (Seung Sahn) was also attacked two nights ago but the felon escaped after pouring fuel on two buildings and igniting them, at about 1 am. >A foreign monk from monk from Vietnam woke up from sleep and alerted the others who smothered the flames. A bell tower at another temple up the mountain was a total loss.... the three temple are all within 30-45 minutes of each other by mountain trails. > >Local police suspect Christian fanatics who have attacked temples in the past, >especially in the month preceding Buddha's Birthday, a splendid national event. > >So far no one has been hurt. The attacks seem centered on buildings but the International Zen center could have been very tragic with Western monks and nuns sleeping on the upper floors...This is not a anti-foreign issue...the otherr losses had no association with foreigners. it is religious. > >I hope I have no other bad news to report later. > >Frank Tedesco >Seoul > ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pathetic, don't you think? http://gort.ucsd.edu/jhan/ TeaTime does jhan. 한바다 **퍼오기 끝 |
