How to apply to the Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme 2002 New awards under the Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORS), likely to be between 800 and 850, will be offered on a competitive basis in 2002 to overseas postgraduate students of outstanding merit and research potential. The awards are tenable at any academic institution listed here. Each award will cover the difference between the tuition fee for a home (UK) postgraduate student and the fee chargeable to an overseas postgraduate student. Awardholders will be overseas graduate students who, in session 2002-03, are commencing full-time study for a degree as registered research students at one of the listed academic institutions, or who are already undertaking such a course and do not have an ORS award. Students entering the third year of their research program will not generally be eligible to apply for an award. They must be liable to pay tuition fees at the rate for overseas students. The only criteria for the awards are outstanding merit and research potential, other factors such as means, nationality, proposed field and institution of study, will not be taken into account. The awards may be held in any field of study. Subject to the satisfactory progress of the award holder, awards will be renewed for a second or third year according to the normal length of the research course being undertaken. The scheme is administered by Universities UK. A special committee, composed of senior members of academic staff of the institutions, is responsible for selection of the awardholders, and for the detailed management of the Scheme. Further details and application forms should be obtained from the Registrar or Secretary of the academic institutions listed where the research is to be undertaken. Applicatnts may want to check the availability of the ORS application form in electronic format with the academic institution concerned. Forms for the academic year 2002-03 are available from institutions. Applicants are however allowed to submit an application for an award through only one academic institution, and the closing date for receipt of the application at the institution concerned is the Monday 22 April 2002.
