In order for the door to work, the energy required to open the door must be in the order of the average thermal energy of a molecule. However, after a thermal equilibrium is reached, the door itself will have that order of thermal energy - that is, it will spontaneously open and close just with its own thermal energy! Therefor, the door cannot be used to direct gas molecules from one side to the other. In order for the system to work, the door must be in a considerably lower temperaturee than the surrounding gas, but then you must do *work* to keep the door in a lower temperature. |
