(June 22, 1999) The best and the brightest in the Java community were honored last week at JavaOne in San Francisco. The awards, sponsored by Java Pro magazine (http://www.java-pro.com) and Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com), honored the best applications, JVMs, and utilities, as well as the individuals and groups whose hard work has helped Java grow and flourish. The Java Pro Reader's Choice Award winners were selected based on surveys of Java Pro readers conducted by Wilson Research Group. There were a number of different products to cover, so the awards were divided into three groups: design/coding tools, "off the shelf" tools and libraries, and deployment environments. Microsoft, Inprise, and Symantec were the big winners of the evening, with the Apache server development team bringing home the prize for best server environment for their freeware Web server tool. While vendors and products were honored by Java Pro, Sun Microsystems paid tribute to individuals and organizations whose efforts have moved Java forward on a number of fronts. Winners ranged from the Java Card Forum to individuals who answered hundreds of their peers questions in support newsgroups.
