It was possible that /etc/hosts had all hosts a long time ago. (? actually until 1989 when Internet began to explode and it became clear that it wold not be possible to keep track of all hosts on the Internet in /etc/hosts of everyhost on the net. Instead, DNS is used,now and nslookup,host and dig make use of DNS(or its implementation in BSD,BIND) werner |
