But, that's not always the case. DOHC refers to the number of cam shafts that open and close intake and exhaust valves. So, theoretically, DOHC engines can have 2 valves/cylinder. The reason why newer high performance engines have 4 valves/cylinder is that better performance can be extracted from an engine since more air can go into the cylinder, resulting in combustion close to ideal. since today's engine uses fuel injection, free flow of air into combustion chamber is extremely important for more power. This is why Ferrari F355 employs 5 valves/cylinder ( 3 for intake, 2 for exhaust). (Toyota Corrola SR5 was the first to have 5 valves/cylinder, though) Acura NSX...simply the BEST... |
