Anyway, I have experienced very similar situation with yours. But it was 5 or more ago. Cars in those day were very different from that of these days, I mean a car in these day has a much larger credibility. There's one thing you should understand before any trial to analyze the causes that made brake system of your car disabled. Hand brake is completely different from Foot brake in the path of transfering pressure from a driver to the friction mechanism. I. Hand brake ------------- If you use hand brake, the pulling force is forwarded to the final frictional mechnism by steel wire basically. II. Foot brake -------------- Meanwhile, if you step on the brake pedal, the pressure delievered in somewhat different and complicate ways. The movement of the brake pedal activate the hydraulic pump which is connented the plastic bottle filled with brake oil in the Engine room of your car with black color. It will amplify the pressure which comes from your stepping with a aid from the Engine and then put the brake oil into the thin pipe attached at the brake oil bottle. The pressure run though the pipe to the final frictional system. Considering your hand brake worked well, I can guess something wrong with your hydraulic pump, brake oil, or brake oil pipe. In case of hydraulic pump and brake oil pipe, I have same experiences with you. 1. If hydraulic pump has a trouble, the brake system of your car will work properly in the most of time but occasionally it will make a trouble. If this is true, you are absolutely supposed to replace hydraulic pump with another. 2. If the brake oil pipe caused your brake system to be disordered, the oil must have leaked out from the oil bottle or pipe. This is somewhat easy to check, what you have to do is to open the hood and to check the level of the brake oil in the bottle. 3. If 1 and 2 are not your case, try to change your brake oil...
