If you're interested in moving here, please plan well ahead. Finding an apartment is very hard. It took me over a months to find 2-bedroom apt for me. I'm paying about $1k/month. If you're going to be working in Kanata (where I work now) try finding an apt in the westside of Ottawa, but again, finding vacant apt is very hard. Living cost, compared to other Canadian cities is a little bit on the high side, here in Ottawa. I find groceries about 50% higher when compared to Edmonton, where I used to live, and is quite well known for low living cost city. However, when my co-workers from San Jose came down for meetings they found prices quite cheap. So, depending on where you're coming in from, it'll be relative. As far as insurance and other costs are concerned, I'm paying $1,300 for mid-size 2001 car. In terms of tax rate, over 100k, you'll be paying about 35-40% on taxes. Being married should reduce the rate to 25-30%. Living style when compared to other US cities, it's really quiet town. The city itself is really old with lots of high-tech industry located in the West side, however, most of entertainment joints are in downtown area. And the Korean community here are very small. There are two Korean restaurants and two Korean groceries stores. Not much for Korean hang outs. I love the Korean scenes in NYC, LA, and Seattle, but nothing in Canada remotely even compares to it. The Korean restaurants in Toronto (Bloor and North York (yonge)) are quite good. I tend to go down to Toronto quite often to get some decent Korean foods and also to hang out. Montreal is just barely under 2 hrs away but I tend to find Montreal a little boring after 10 visits. At least in Toronto, I don't have to worry about running into language barrier and idiots who tend to listen to me in English and reply back in French. Maybe I should brush up on my French skills, instead of just "Je nie parlez par le francais" |
