[ UMN ] in KIDS 글 쓴 이(By): jskkim (김준석) 날 짜 (Date): 1998년04월11일(토) 02시44분09초 ROK 제 목(Title): Re: Expenses at UMN It depends on your marriage status and the number of dependents. Basically, if you get an 50% assistantship, you will not spend any money on paying tuition and health insurance. You may pay 160 - 500 dollars for miscellaneous fees (student fee, computer fee and books, etc) in each quarter. In settling down, getting a housing is one of the primary concern. There are various types of housings around campus. First, you can get a housing given by the U. If you are married, you can apply for the apartment provided by the university to the married graduate student. You may pay 400 to 500 dollars for a month. At the first time, you have to pay the security deposit in addition to the regular payment. The amount of deposit is the very same as that of a month payment. One problem for getting a student apartment is that You may wait for 6 - 12 months to get an available apartment because it is pretty competitive. If you are a single, you may apply for the dorm. You may pay 2,000 to 3,000 dollars for a quarter. This payment includes the meal plan. However you may have to wait for a very long time to get a room in the dorm. The another option is to get a private apartment around the campus. The types of the apartments are classified by the number of bedrooms they have. The main types are efficiency, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartment. Efficiency is the very same as the one-room apartment in Korea. The payments may be 350 to 600 dollars for efficiency, 400 to 700 for one-bedroom, and 550 to 900 for two-bedroom. Buying a car could be another main concern. In order to buy a new car, you may pay over 10,000 dollars. You may pay 3,000 to 7,000 to buy a good used car. You should buy auto insurance when you have a car. It may be 300 to 1,000 for 6 months. Finally, you may have living expenditures (e.g. foods, clothes, etc). It depends on your family size. It may vary 200 to 600 dollars. Now you can guess your total expenses for the first year. You may get about 12,000 dollars for a year from your assistantship. Then you can finally get your additional expenses for the first year.
