First of all, I want you to be aware of the following aspects when driving in the U.S. 1. Driving in the U.S. is extremely easy compared to that in Seoul. You might suffer from bumper-to-bumper traffic in downtown during rush hours, however, you will perfectly enjoy real driving in other places unless there is unexpected accidents. So, no need to be afraid of difficulty in driving in the U.S. 2. Driving a few hundred miles in a day is not a big deal at all. When I have three-day trip, I drive 600 miles in average in a day. In case of six- or seven- day trip, I drive 400 miles in average in a day. It would be better if someone to drive can have a trip with you. 3. When you have a long distance driving, don't forget to try to find gas stations when your fuel gauge indicates below half. 4. No need to over-speed. If you keep driving at limited speed (or +5 to +10), almost no body behind you complains. They will simply pass you and let them pass you. 5. If you need information on lodging and points of interest, ask people in Visitor Center or AAA. Also, you can get great tour books and maps at AAA. If you don뭪 have membership of AAA, you need to pay for tourbooks ($10.00), maps($less than $5.00) Back to imaginary one-week trip schedule... :-) 1st day - Arrive at San Francisco, rent a car @Hertz, Avis, etc.. - Get to Inn (you can find very good but cheap inns in the U.S. - Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn, Days Inn, etc... priced at $60.00 to $80.00) - Look around bay area of San Francisco (Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, Downtown, etc.) - Take a good rest.... 2nd day - Heading for Los Angeles: Three ways to get to L.A> 1. via I-5 (400 miles, nothing to see except hills) 2. US-101 (450 miles, longer time, sometimes seashore) 3. SR-1 (520 miles, longest time, mostly seashore) - Check in the Inn in Santa Monica City - Visit Hollywood, UCLA, Korea town, and Little Tokyo 3rd day - Visit one of the three places: Universal Studio, Disney Land, or Magic Mountain (to visit three places will take three days) 4th day - Heading for Las Vegas (via I-10 and I-15, 290 miles) - most of famous places are on Las Vegas Blvd. - In MGM hotel, there are some good machines that have very high probability. To have your turn, you need to wait for thirty minutes or so... 5th day - Go to Lake Tahoe (SR-95, SR-6, SR-395 400 miles) - As you know, purity of Lake Tahoe is higher than that of distilled water.. 6th day - Go to Yosemite Park (SR-120, 150 miles) - You can return to San Francisco in night time - Have some Lemon Sozoo at Korean Restaurant on El Camino Real (SR-82) 7th day - Return the car and get ready to return to Korea.... - On the way to Korea, you will keep good sleeping.. :-) In addition to the places listed above, needless to say, there are many other good places to visit. However, due to your limited trip schedule, you might not see other places.... If you can visit California in winter, then you can visit Death Valley Park. Plus, if you can make some airplane trip, then I would like to recommend you to visit Seattle, Grand Canyon, Colorado Springs, Yellow Stone Park, Monument Valley, and some other places in Mid- and West-America. If you have any questions regarding trip to the U.S. (especially for Mid- and West-U.S.A.), you are free to contact me at dspark@icsl.ucla.edu. Anyway, I hope you have a unforgettable trip...
