At Stanford, there are both physics and applied physics dept. AP do have MS course which does not necessarily lead to PhD. Usually, people in natural science disciplines directly come to PhD after getting their bachelor degree. Period for getting PhD in physics? Well, 3 to 9 indluding extreme cases so far.
