The Dodgers trail the San Francisco Giants, who lost to Colorado, by 1 1/2 games in the National League West with five games remaining. Los Angeles was on top of the division until losing two straight to San Francisco last week, starting the five-game slide. "The biggest thing is we're back in this thing," Dodgers manager Bill Russell said. "We've got to win five more games because it's unrealistic to think other teams are going to help us," Zeile said. "We have to play every night like it could be our last one." Park, who threw 141 pitches, gave up seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts. His only other complete game came on August 11th of this season in a 2-1 victory against the Cubs. Park, who was previously 0-2 lifetime against the Padres, won for the first time in his last five starts. "The fact that I pitched a complete game even though I was tired gives me confidence and makes me happy," Park said. "He's been a big pitcher for us all year, and you saw his performance tonight," Russell said. Zeile led off the second inning with a homer to tie the game, 2-2, and Otis Nixon delivered a two-out single off Paul Menhart (2-3) in the fifth, plating Darren Lewis with the go-ahead run. Zeile's two-out homer, his 29th, on Menhart's 0-1 pitch in the sixth gave Los Angeles a 4-2 edge. It was the 10th multi-homer game of his career and his fourth this season. San Diego's Tony Gwynn slapped a two-out single in the eighth, bringing reigning NL MVP Ken Caminiti to the plate as the tying run. However, Park got him to fly out to left to end the threat. "I walked out there and asked him (Park) how he felt," Russell said. "He said he wanted to face Caminiti and it worked out." "I thought I'd be taken out," Park said. "Before he said anything, I told him I wanted to be in the game and I knew how to pitch to Caminiti. He (Russell) said 'good luck' and left the mound." Piazza reached on an infield single to lead off the eighth and Karros crushed a 2-1 pitch from Tim Worrell over the left-center field fence for his 29th homer and a 6-2 lead. "I haven't had one of my better months, in fact, it's been one of my worst," said Karros, who last homered on August 31st. "Hopefully, we'll get this thing turned around. We've got five more to go." Piazza stroked a two-out double in the first inning and Karros followed with a double to left for a 1-0 lead. John Flaherty's two-run homer in the second inning was the only offense for San Diego, which has dropped three straight games. "We did well, but the longball killed us tonight," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "We just ran into a well-pitched ball game tonight." Gwynn's single was his 218th hit of the season, tying a career high. It also matches the franchise record, which he set in 1986.
