To answer your question, I can simply repeat what you said. :) WHY American math is #1 at this moment? Think this way. It has something to do with MONEY. American universities buy all good mathematicians from Europe, Russia, Japan and so on. If those 'foreign' mathematicians had remained in their own countries, do you believe American math would be still #1? Currently, very few persons in American universities believe that their math education in college level is successful. Even in my university, whose undergraduate program ranked within top 10 this year according to USnews ranking, calculus courses are disastrous.
