All-pervading is the Great Tao! It may be found on the left hand and on the right. 2. All things depend on it for their production, which it gives to them, not one refusing obedience to it. When its work is accomplished, it does not claim the name of having done it. It clothes all things as with a garment, and makes no assumption of being their lord;--it may be named in the smallest things. All things return (to their root and disappear), and do not know that it is it which presides over their doing so;--it may be named in the greatest things. 3. Hence the sage is able (in the same way) to accomplish his great achievements. It is through his not making himself great that he can accomplish them. 大道氾兮, 其可左右. (대도범혜, 기가좌우) 큰 도는 넘침이여, 왼쪽이든 오른쪽이든 (넘칠 수) 있다. (또는) 어떻게 그 방향을 제어할 수 있겠는가? 萬物恃之而生而不辭, (만물시지이생이불사) 모든 것이 이에 의지하여 생겨나지만 참견하지 않고, 功成而不有, 衣養萬物而不爲主. (공성이불유, 의양만물이불위주) 공이 있어도 가지지 않고, 만물을 키우면서도(옷입히고 먹이면서도) 주인노릇하지 않는다. 常無欲, 可名於小, (상무욕, 가명어소) 항상 바라는 바가 없으므로 작다고 말할 수도 있고, 萬物歸焉而不爲主, 可名爲大. (만물귀언이불위주, 가명위대) 만물이 귀의하여도 주인노릇하지 않으므로 크다고도 말할 수 있다. 以其終不自爲大, 故能成其大.
