BALTIMORE(AP)-- The quark may not be the smallest particle of matter after all according to scientists at the Fermi National Accelarator Labaratory in Batavia, Illinois. In a report released Wednesday by Science magazine, researchers at Fermi say they found that collisions between quarks in a particle accelerator were so violent tht it suggests tht the particles may have a hard internal substructur -e. Researchers at Fermi announced in March tht they had discovered the top quark the last of six families, called "flavors", of quarks thought to exist. The half-dozen quark flavors are thought to be the smallest, most elemental form of matter. But in the Science report, the researchers now say that during a year-long run of the particle accelerator at Fermilab they observed a large mumber of violent collisons that could be the result of particles that are actually sub- quark in size. "This is just the sort of effect you would see if quarks were not fundament- al particles, but had some sort of internal structure," William Carithers of Fermilab told Science reporter James Glanz. If this is true, then the finding would challenge the accuracy of the accep- ted theory for fundamental matter, a concept called the Standard Model. Re- searchers, however, say there may be expanations that are consistent with the widely accepted theory of matter. These alternatives are now being studied. Science said a paper reporting the finding has been submitted to Physical Review Letters, a major scientific journal, but the study has not yet been subjected to peer review, a process in which other experts in the field cri- tically evaluate the research. |
