Three reported injured in explosion on MIT campus By Boston.com and Associated Press, 10/26/99 CAMBRIDGE - As many as three people have been reported injured and a building on the MIT campus has been evacuated after an explosive device went off in a student's hand. MIT spokesman Bob Sales said the incident may have been a prank gone awry. He said the student was dressed in a Halloween costume and was part of a group from the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity who were inside the lobby of an MIT building on Memorial Drive. Traffic in the area was reported snarled by emergency equipment converged on the scene. Sales said the students were apparently staffing a display table when, at some point, they decided to march upstairs and into a lecture hall where an engineering class was in progress. As they walked up and down the aisle of the hall, the device one of them was holding exploded, officials said. There was no immediate word on what kind of device it was or the extent of the injuries.
