The Korean righthander, 23, struck out 15 Friday night for Pawtucket in a seven-inning, 3-2 win over Syracuse, in what was by far his most dominating outing in a professional career that began only last spring. Cho, who pitched the second game of the PawSox' doubleheader against Syracuse, fell four strikeouts short of the team record set by Dick Pole in 1973. Cho struck out the side in the second, fourth, and sixth innings, and twice struck out four in a row. The Kid from Jun Ju City struck out every batter in the Syracuse order except Rob Mummau, the No. 9 hitter. Given a lead in the top of the seventh on Chris Snopek's RBI single, Cho gave up two-out singles but struck out Chris Woodward to end the game. Cho is 2-0 in three starts for the PawSox, with 27 strikeouts and just three walks in 20 innings. He gave up seven hits Friday night, including a two-run home run by Chris Jones, and his earned run average is a staff-best 1.35. With Pat Rapp 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in his first three starts for the Red Sox, Cho becomes a strong candidate for promotion. ''He was outstanding,'' Pawtucket manager Gary Jones said yesterday. ''He's had three good outings. He used both sides of the plate, changed speeds, and stayed down in the zone. He's throwing his fastball, curveball, and slider for strikes.'' Jones, the first-year manager for the PawSox, said communication has not been a problem with Cho. ''Baseball is a universal game,'' Jones said. ''He can't go public and hold a conversation, but he communicates with the guys here as well as he needs.'' Added PawSox pitching coach Rich Bombard, ''Right now, maybe it's good I can't [talk with Cho]. He's throwing the ball too good.'' From today's Boston Globe... |
