I read the postings about the Phantom of the Opera, and was a bit disappointed to see everybody seems to think Christine as a boneheaded slut only looking for a good nose. (By the way, there's no reference whatsoever that Erik didn't have one....) Christine is a typical gril. I think she wanted to be just a simple girl in love. She never asked Erik to make herself a diva or a heroin which she was not cut out to be. She was merely misleaded to believe that the Phantom was the ghost of her dead father, and tried to make his wish come true. Then she discovered what she was really looking for --- a little bit of kindness -- in the viscount whose name just escapes me. She was a lonely girl, without a family or friends. She fell for what she thought the ghose of her father, than she learned the truth. When she screemed not at the Phantom's deformed face, but at the horrible truth that she was being used merely for her voice, can you blame her? And the Viscount. What he had that the Phintom didn't was not the good looks, but his kindness. Although he didn't have the musical spirit of the Phantom, or the great vision, or the ability to make Christine a Diva, he certainly did have what all women are looking for -- a kind heart. |
