How to use the USC Access Counter To use the counter, place something like this in your page: <img src="http://www.usc.edu/cgi-bin/counter?TAG&DISPLAY_OPTION"> Where TAG is a unique string identifying you and your page, and DISPLAY_OPTION specifies the appearance of the counter. TAGS Please keep your tag short (say, less than 30 characters), but descriptive of the page it represents. This is so the database doesn't grow too large, too quickly. Don't use any spaces in the tag. Important: While the naming conventions of TAG are not forced, I would strongly suggest using an absolute URL replacing the initial redundant information (http://www.usc.edu/), with your user name. Something like "mark:/UCS/USCnet.html" would work just great if the accesses were being counted for the page "http://www.usc.edu/UCS/USCnet.html" The following are always rejected as TAGS: font= increment index index.html noshow number value width= welcome welcome.html The following TAGS are special: digits returns all digits in the current font random or rand returns a random number any TAGS starting with a digit display TAG as a number DISPLAY_OPTIONS NOTE: You must include at least one display option (other than noshow) in order for a graphic to be displayed. If no display options are specified, your counter will be incremented, but no graphic will be delivered. width= specify minimum number of digits to display in the count font= specify what font to use (odometer or digital); the default is odometer The following DISPLAY_OPTIONS are only valid with normal TAGS: number interpret TAG as a number noinc or value only show the value for TAG, don't increment increment increment and show value for TAG show at least show value for TAG noshow increment TAG only Sample <img src="http://www.usc.edu/cgi-bin/counter?mark:/Help/Authors/Counter.shtml&width= 5"> produces: Resetting the Counter The only way to reset the counter to zero is to use a new TAG. It is suggested that you simply change your TAG by a couple of characters to reset it to zero. For example, if your original image tag was as follows,: <img src="http://www.usc.edu/cgi-bin/counter?dude:/Foo/baR/here.html&width=5"> you could reset your counter to zero by using the following as your new image tag: <img src="http://www.usc.edu/cgi-bin/counter?dude:/Foo/baR/here.html2&width=5"> There is no way to set a counter at any other number.
