( taking only 0,1 randomly.) but if you have billions of billions of discrete random variables, you will eventually approximating continuous random variables. but you can't truely understand the continuous random variables only thru the discrete random variables. the samething is true for living organism. adding billions of billions of DNA can't explain properly the whole organism because the mathematics that describes the discrete world is so limited. think about numbers. every number can be defined with only 0 and 1. (even real number can be defined in this way.) however, defining something doesn't mean you can explain it. you can look from bottom up but there is a certain limitation. for example, you can describe the natural numbers by counting all of them 0,1,2,3, ... however you can simply say that the natural numbers are the ones that satisfies the functional relationship f(x)=x and instead of studying 0,1,2,3,.. itself, we can study the characteristics of f(x)=x which in certain sense much easier. nothing can escape the mathematical reasonings because this is the very basis of discrete systems. but why there are so many mathematican who are specialized in studying continuous system when every numbers can be defined in descrete way? that is because it is much easier to explain from top to bottom instead of rebuilind pyramid each time somebody want to explain what is actually on top of the pyramid. computers are very good at rebuilding and computing from bottom to top but computation is not understanding. :) |
