I've never heard of this kind of "exemption" during the war time, but it could have been possible if the student who was exempted was involved in military related researches. (Tokyo Univ. students, too, were sent to the war, for your information.) Just remembered this: one of US B-29 bombers was shot down in 1944 or 1945, and its engine(s) was sent to Tokyo Inst. of Tech. for analysis. U.S. Air forces came to know the fact after Japan had surrendered, requested the return of the engine as in 1946 the engine was a sort of top secret. My Alma Mata pretended that she didn't have the engine, but you can still find the engine somewhere in Oh-okayama campus. And the English notation of my Alma Mata, Tokyo Institute of Technology. The school was modeled after M.I.T. at its foundation in 1881, the name, too, was a simple substitute. BUT! Nowadays the graduates from the school who know how to look up an English Dictionary wouldn't use the shorthand "T.I.T." as .... it's a kind of shame to have that kind of name! (Check up your dictionary at "tit") So, please use "Tokyo Tech." or Tokyo Inst. of Tech, but not TIT for its honor(?)...
