Well, regardless of your length of visit in the kingdom, the Grand Palace is the mandatory start. It is the ultimate Thai temple and a microcosm of Thai art, architecture and history. For a gimpse of what Bangkok used to look like, Jim Thompson's House on Rama I Road is an excellent attraction. Thompson was an American who came to Thailand at the end of World War II and revived the silk industry before disappearing mysteriously in Malaysia in 1958. His house is a remarkable collection of Asian antiques and artifacts housed in anelegant Thai-style teak house. Its location, at the end of Soi Kasem 1 opposite the Naitonal Stadui, is a welcome respite from the Bangkok roads. |
