Although there is nothing wrong with that - or is there? - I think it would be nice to also have a discussion about more general matters. A subject matter that deserves much more discussion than it is currently getting is the nuclear weapons and the danger it poses not only to Koreans but also people of all race and nationality. Especially in Korea, many South Koreans seem to view the issue through the eyes of the U.S. government. Most South Koreans condemn the North Koreans for their efforts to obtain nuclear capability - and they are right, in my opinion - but do not see that the U.S. government is also a large part of the problem. The NPT(Nuclear Proliferation Treaty) is a good example of the hypocracy that permeates the U.S. nuclear policy. The basic thrust of the treaty is : "If you got it(nuclear weapons) already, you can keep it. If you haven't got it yet, you better not try." Most Korean seem to think - through ignorance or lack of care - that this is a fair deal. If you got the weapons already, it's a great deal, but what about all the other countries? If the U.S., Russia, China, and Israel ( Most believe the Israeli nuclear capabilities were obtained through help of the U.S. government) have the right to defend themselves with nuclear weapon, why not other countries? I am not advocating more proliferation of the nuclear weapons. What I AM saying is that the nuclear powers should do away with their weapons of mass destruction while providing poorer nations more incentives NOT TO DEVELOP nuclear weapons , for example, by declaring that they will under no condition use their nuclear weapons. |
