Once I was asked by a friend of mine whether or not I think the bombing on Japan was necessary. That time, I answered no. And I think my answer is still 'no' reading the handout today. The handout consists of two historians' view, and their views are both different. One historian argued that the bombing wasn't necessary, and the U.S. used the bomb just to scare the Soviets before they declared a war with Asia, not to stop the war with Japan. He/she also says that Japan was going to surrender insisting only one condition; to keep their Emperor, but U.S. wanted them to be surrendered unconditionally. The other historian argued that the bombing was the only way to surrender Japan and having the settlement with Japan before they did was certainly not possible unless Japan decides to surrender unconditionally. He/she argued, that U.S. tried to avoid conditional surrender because of what had happened to German when they weren't surrendered without any conditions. Thus, they rose again and that we had a WW II. Frankly I agree with the first historian who said the bombing wasn't necessary. I think the bombing issue could perhaps be a moral issue as well. Meditating what had happened to so many lives and humen, the issue may continue forever. People who died by the bomb should be much luckier than who didn't, I say. See people who still suffers due to the bomb.. some people who found to be alright, later marries, then they have a child and the child borns to be abnormal. Not mentally or emotionally, but they have been physically affected. This continues from generations to generations. That's how AFFECTIVE this atomic bomb is. It didn't just end in 1945! If the U.S. didn't bomb and the surrender were to be delayed, oh well.. I don't think that could have, I mean the war could have continued until today suffering many people still. My dad said the bomb was necessary otherwise we wouldn't know how long the war could have lasted..but the bombing wasn't necessary, was it? Bombing on Japan was not the only way to surreder Japan, was it? Certainly not. First the Japan was going to surrender but they didn't meet for a settlement with the U.S..and the war may have lasted a bit longer then have them surrendered. I don't think the war may have lasted forever. I wwould like to hear opinions from you all..do you all think the bombing was necessary, too? Or do you think it wasn't? __ ***** /\ |- __|| ***** ***** / \|- |__ | ***** |
