Hah Hah...I can see that school has started because everybody seems to be so angry all of a sudden... Heh Heh...it must be because of school! Why are Korean Students angry at American Soldiers in Korea? Well, there are two reasons: political and cultural. Politically speaking, the only way North and South Korea can unite, it seems, is after the American military completely leaves South Korea. This, of course, has brought forth the 45 year predicament: if US military leaves Korea, what guarantee is there that the 1 million soldier North Korean Army will not repeat 1950.6.25 and march toward Pusan? Can the modern ROK military alone, without US assistance, adequately defend South Korea from a North Korean invasion? It appears that many Korean Students believe that a North Korean invasion can be diverted peacefully through dialogue and proper diplomatic relations with North Korea. Thus, through the eyes of Korean Students, the American military's presence in South Korea only serves as a hindrance to peaceful reconciliation, diplomatic relations, and the feasibility of complete unification with North Korea. Furthermore, many Korean Students accuse the United States government of using the South Korean peninsula as a "Pacific Fortress" to exert US military power in the entire Asia-Pacific region. Culturally speaking, the presence of US military in South Korea threatens the very existence of some of Korea's most ancient and proudest cultural history. Possibly, Korean Students face a dilemma as they ask themselves, "How westernized do I want to become? Should I guard Korean culture at all costs and shun everything associated with the wicked ways of the West, or should I accept some westernized values, even if that means surrendering some of the eastern traditions that I have been taught by my parents and grandparents?" Apparently, to these Korean Students, the US military is acting as a catalyst, rapidly decaying the traditional Korean culture and replacing it immediately with a new westernized appearance. This juxtaposition of two divergent cultures is causing increased resentment toward American westernization. .........Well, I hope that clears things up a little bit....Who wants me to translate this into Hangul so you can practice your English?......Just say what Board you want me to put it on, no problem!!! --------From the "Big Nose" American (William) :-------) ------------- **** -------- "백인의 눈으로 보면..." ------------- ------------- |
