On the third or second floor at the LA County Museum, I was scanning through the Greek sculptures. Casually, yet pretending to be serious like a professional artist, I looked at this handsome, mascular, bodybuilder-on-the-poster, Greek guy: a perfect body. And this minie ninie tiny penis of his stopped my eyes (most of Greek male sculptures are naked). I've never seen a penis this "sad" (not that I have seen lots of penes). It was a textbook example for the concept of "contrast"; think of his perfectly shaped "body" and this small "guy (boy?)." I conveyed my discovery to a female friend who came along. "Really?" responded she. "Yes," said I. "Hmm...," declared she, "must be an evidence of anti-phallicentrism." "!!??!?... maybe," I responded. She and I started looking around, again, to prove this anti-phallicentrism of Greek. Naked body to naked body, penis to penis. Well, I didn't buy her theory, but couldn't stop this "reborn" Art Psychoanalyst, either. Not being myself Sigmund Freud, I was, of course, unable to analyze with any precision what on earth this artistic expression signified. Left her rudimentary theory unfinished, went to the cafe and sipping coffee. Still have no idea why it had to be that way. Ah, those LA days... ----------------------------------------- Mountain is mountain, water is water. --------------------------------------- J |
