Well, bible is the most read book in the world, next to koran, i think. and bible is the most distorted/mis-understood book in the world, historically. next most distorted and over-analyzed books are shakespeare. go figure. did shakespeare really intend those words and expressions? and don't get me wrong. they deserve the attention they receive... bible for the historical values and significances, and more and shakespeare for the propagadaistic writing of the elizabethan era, etc... what writers should be concerned is that any possible misundertanding is eliminated in the writing. thus the rigid structure of legal-contracts. i enjoy hemingway's writing style, it's so long, but the descriptions are precise and not much room for misunderstanding of the writer's intention. an old man goes fishing in the sea and catches fish, and returns home. misunderstanding is bound to happen, no matter what. just be ready for it, and accept it. it makes our society work a little smoother. it's a pity what happend in Sudan. but it's different culture. it's probably not right to impose our values upon 'em. let 'em be who they are, and once we truly understand and think like they do, we may be able to impose their values upon ours. :) |
