After few days I realize I'm not capable of writing something unless someone does force me to do. My plan was taking a writing course like last summer. This summer, however, the department didn't approve any body to take summer courses except those who are graduating this summer, which didn't happened for 3 years. Although I couldn't complete that writing project in summer, I'll keep reading books as much as I can. As one of guests recommended, the book by Adler and van Doren is good to understand how to read books. I guess I went through half of the book sometime ago and didn't finish it. At least it's worthwhile to spend sometime on that book first, before I start other books that I bought from the book fair. Not many students around like reading books. Sometimes, friends are horrified. Strange to say, I saw some people who love to collect books. I know a professor who had books which have J.Joyce's signature on it. He has books and letters that bear famous people's signtures. I doubt if he reads books thesedyas, though. One impression I got from last year's writing class, this class was for college freshmen, was young kids do not read books that much. One class hour was spent to discuss books that impressed them but those kids could bring up books that their parents read before they went to bed. No one even say "To kill a mokcing bird," which I heard high school requirement and which I think fabulous. I may give one brief book report on Ramses, which I spend a semester to finish (do not blame my slowness; I read other books and took 5 courses and worked at a company half time) It is good book(s) in terms of learning ancient egypt. The author has good knowlegde of egyptology and he smeared his knowledge through Ramses' life. However, there are too many artificial plots to force story follows. Although it has five volumns (I heard Korean translation made it 7 volumns), it seems too short to describe him who had to govern a country. Almost all figures appeared and disappeared intentionally by the author and some stories are repeated with different figures, which I thought redundant. It seems like a plain summary of one's life with a touch of novel style. I bet most of historic novels have similar problems unless they contain particular moment of history. I remember I read the book, "Eternal Empire (young-won-han-je-gook)" with facination, which only tells short part of history. On the other hand, historic novels are good aids for those who do not know much about history to be interested in history. I may have more attraction toward egyptian sections in a museum than before if I go metropolitan again. Possibly in future, other european museums of which country stealed many egyptian relics will become attractive not only because their art collection but also those stolen relics. Currently I went back to the book that I didn't finish. The title is Bridget Jones the edge of reason. The book, Bridget Jones' diary was hilarious; more hilarious than the movie and I saw the sequal exists. No reason to hesitate reading it, although I knew sequals do not give same amount of impression compared to the original ones. (A recent example I can say is the sequel of "the bridge of madison county") Well, thanks again for your comments. If I found books that are interesting, I'll post the title, the author, and its genre with a brief comment on Book board. @혼자서도 잘해요. |
