The incident has been reported from the coastal district of Vishakhapatnam where six teenage tribal girls were found three months pregnant. The district collector, MT Krishna Babu, said the girls were students at a school run specially for tribals at Dumbriguda in Vishkhapatnam. He said the students were not allowed to leave the hostel premises nor were any visitors allowed inside. This led the police to suspect six male teachers and the school's head-master, who were the only people with access to the hostel. Arrests Mr Babu said the teachers have been arrested and were being interrogated by the police. He said the girls were in an advanced stage of pregnancy and it was to dangerous to try and terminate it. The incident has evoked angry reactions. The state's Tribal Welfare Minister, M Manikumari, said the guilty would not be spared. She also criticised the school authorities for appointing male teachers at a girls' school. Some officials, however, say its difficult to get female teachers for tribal schools as most of them are located in remote areas. |
