Here's another article which appeared on 6th April,1999 under the "Thoughts of the Times". Global Peace : Understanding the need Whatever views do we have about the origin of the human species. But you will agree that life is our most precious commodity. We can not imagine that whole species can come to an end, least of all by the action of man. Yes, the unimaginable has become possible now. The continuation of the human species on the earth can no longer be guaranteed. The human species is now an endangered species. Of course, one always envisions that human life may come to an end. But we always think of it as the result of some cosmological event, say a collision with a meteorite or with a comet or perhaps a violent volcanic eruption. That human life could come to an end by the action of man was never considered seriously. Of course, throughout the history we had wars with terrible carnage. The largest fatalities in the wars have occurred in this century. In the 1st world war, 8.5 million people perished as the direct result of the combat and in the 2nd world war, 55 million people died. In these atrocities, however, the human species were not endangered, largely for the technical reasons. Now, however, these technical reasons are no more obstacles. The chief characteristic of this age is that for the first time it has become possible for man to bring the whole human species to an end in a single act. For many centuries, we have been governed by a policy based on the roman motto that says: Si vis pacem para bellum- if you want peace, prepare for war. We prepared for war and what we had was war not peace. If we look at the past and the present, we will find that a world of peace is not a crazy idea but is the demand of the time. We are getting to it without knowing it. We are getting it gradually. In Europe, which has experienced continuous wars, the two mortal enemies have always been France and Germany. Now a war in between them is quite inconceivable. We are gradually realizing the futility of wars. We are realizing that we must find other ways of solving the disputes amicably not by force. Nevertheless, for this concept to be accepted generally, we have a process of education that will make us feel members of the world community. Military regimes are crumbling and democracies are being introduced. In particular, we must think about security in global terms rather than national terms. Strangely enough, this is becoming more realizable as the result of the progress of science and technology. It is really paradoxical that the same human activity, science and technology, that can bring the whole of mankind to an end can also be our salvation. The fantastic advances in the science, technology, communication and transportation means have shrunk the globe and brought us all very close to each other. What we need to do in order to preserve the mankind from the disaster and to give this invaluable gift to coming generations? The answer is peace, which should not be a national agenda but must be an international or global entity. Peace is a symbol of harmony which can help us to understand each other and can lead us in keeping this planet free from the disaster on which the human species, in fact the most precious, is found and survives. We must give this invaluable gift to our offsprings in a similar fashion as we got it from our ancestors but in a more civilized way and in a civilized society where love and peace flourishes together and the harmony is the motto of life. Then only the Roman proverb will be Si vis pacem para pacem- If you want peace, prepare for peace. We must realize that the cause of wars, both in the ancient and recent past, was the economic problems. So history teaches us good lesson, not to fight for territory or other materialistic things, and must seek the peaceful solution of all the problems. We must not forget that in 200 to 400 years, earlier rather than later, all civilizations will disappear from the face of the earth. That we categorically know. Completely disappear, I cannot see anything before me, or see anything coming. I can only see a vacuum, emptiness, and nothing. The civilizations are vanishing faster than anything and the globe is shrinking day by day. We must dream of the day when we will be a part of the global village and will have an identity of a human being irrespective of nationality, creed, race or religion and will live as a family all together. Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. Sir Winston Churchill. From "End of the Beginning" So this is the end of the beginning of the peace and we have to go a long way to achieve the goal of a peaceful world. Did u enjoy?^^ Have a nice day ! :) for u all! |
