Just a little handy works. ====================================================== I would like to talk about my group project. My group's topic is American Proverbs. We had searched for a lot of materials in the library, then we could find out similarities and differences between American proverbs and Korean ones. Different words are used to imply the same meanings. Cultural difference made the different choice of words; Historical background, landscape, and the way of people think also made the differences. Let me give you some examples to back my assumptions. First, American proverb 'Born in a barn'. Could you guess what Korean proverb is corresponding to this one ? I'll make an example. look at this(Make a chart I and see) Which one is correct? (See the chart and check the right proverb) This one is correct. I'm going to explan why this proverb is correct. Have a long tail means if someone has a long tail, he will not close the door, until the long tail comes in completely. So if someone leaves the door open, we say, he has a long tail. I couldn't guess the Korean proverb corresponding to 'Born in a barn' in the first place. In order to understand American proverb 'Born in a barn', we have to know a barn. 'Barn' means a place of growing horses and cows. It is called in Korea '외양간', but it has some differences between Korean barn and American one. The land is pretty vast and wide in America. American farmers usually have very big land. Naturally, they need many horses and cows to help them. Automatically, barns are big so American barns usually don't have doors. Even though they have doors, people seldom bother to try to close it. because the door is too big to close. We can see that kind of barns in the western movies. Therefore people born in a barn and grown up there, they don't know how to close the door or they seldom bother to try to close it. Finally, both Korea and America have a barn but the size of barn is different. It is up to their culture. therefore in order to correctly understand the proverbs we have to know about their culture especially, cultural difference. ============================================================= |
