It happened on Monday night after work. My co-worker (also Korean) and I stayed until midnight for a project we were working on. Everything was looking good until the phone rang.. it was my co-worker's newly-wedded wife. And some complications were presented: he wrecked his brand new car just 2 weeks ago, and his wife from Korea could not drive. She, however, was spending the evening at her sister-in-law's (picked up by the in-law)and was having car trouble. The in-law, along with his wife, were supposed to pick him up at work but could not due to this problem. Oh well~, he lives about 30 min. away in the opposite direction of my travel but I offered him a ride. I thought we could develop new friendship this way. Anyway, I took him home (his wife got home via cab since it was not a great distance from the in-law's) and then stopped at a gas station for some fuel. After fueling, a black man(mid-20s) approached me with a desperate situation. He told me his car broke down and is stranded on the streets with his wife and 2 young children. This was not a crappy neighborhood where gun-shots are heard every night or one always have to watch his back.. and he sounded really desperate! So I agreed to take him in my mom's car ('83 Olds Omega, barely running, real peice of junk) to his location of break-down. On the way, he requested that we go to his friend's apartment to get some help from him, and I agreed. Where his friend supposedly lived WAS a crappy and dangerous neighborhood, and I cautiously pulled over to his directed spot. And as soon as I came to a stop, he pulled out a 9mm and pointed it at my head without saying a word. The feeling at this moment is ... not describable in words. I initially thought he intended to jack my car.. so I handed over the keys and money from my wallet, saying "take it all, man.." He looked into my eyes ( I was not looking direcly at him, but I know he was looking into my eyes) before he fled the scene. He took the $ but didn't take the car. It probably took less than 2-3 min. but it felt like the longest time of chills and nervousness. I got out of the neighborhood and called police. They took me around (1. gas station where I picked him up; 2. place where we stopped) for their report, and told me that there is a suspected crack-house near where I dropped him off. Cops also said that I was lucky that he didn't decide to shoot me. When I got home after all this ordeal, it was 3:15 a.m. I got out of the car and stared at the car momentarily.. "I'm glad I frove this junk to work.. if I had taken my truck, it could have been a very different story.." Either way, I should be happy about the fact that I am still alive and kickin'~!! |
