A few weeks ago, I had the chance to read an article about the Oxford University in England. It left a deep impression on me. Having been educated mostly in Korea and U.S. - well, entirely - their system of teaching and learning seemed quite different from what I know and have become accustomed to. First of all, The university is divided into dozens of small Colleges, each of which has been around for at least 500 years. There are only 300 to 400 students in each College and everything they do evolves around the College they are enrolled in. They hear lectures there, eat there, and exercise there. They rarely go out of their own College during their stay at Oxford University. Although there might be several disadvantages to such a system, I believe it hass much more human feel to it than the American (and Korean) university system. In an American (or Korean) university, one has the freedom to do what they want, but nobody really cares what you learn and how you learn it. In Oxford, it is said no one can go unnotice. The college itself is very small, so the familiy feeling is inherent. Furthermore, the teaching process is very personal. Through one-on-one discussions, the students are taught and tested. A professor is allocated to every student, and the student must meet every week with the professor to be tested and taught. What I do no like about American (or Korean) system of teaching is that everyone is treated the same. They are taught the same things and tested the same way. Although there are some basic skills which must be taught to everyone, I believe in universities, the students should be allowed to express their indivisuality and creativity in a human atmosphere. That is what I envy about the Oxford University's teaching methods. 혁 명 |
