First read the following poem, then I will ask you a question. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PHOENIX by Chong, Chi-yong I can neither name nor elucidate you. You have nested in my inmost heart. Wingless bird, an embedded arrow, I know your sad cries and pained gestures. I cannot send you away--no one wants you. Truly, happiness is your enemy. Have you indeed possessed my heart? My bride! I've sealed my window and my laughter. One day you died when my youth was spent. Where is the stone that marks your grave? Spreading wings amid a mound of ashes, O sorrow, your phoenix, my tears! ------------------------------------------------------------------ This poem is interesting for me because of the apparent contradiction between the connotation of the title of the poem(phoenix) and the tone of the poem. I think "phoenix" connotes 'happiness,' 'hope,' and other good and bright things. But the tone of poem is very sober and sad. So my question is how to explain this sapparent contradiction? (If you do not think there is a contradiction between the title of the poem and its tone, please explain why you think so.) I know it's an absurd question. But it is an interesting question to me.
